NOW OPEN! Call for Nominations: President, SUS Foundation

The Society of University Surgeons (SUS) invites nominations for the position of President of the SUS Foundation.

The SUS Foundation exists to advance the mission of the Society by fostering philanthropy that supports academic surgeons and trainees through research, education, and leadership development. The Foundation provides critical resources that enable the next generation of surgical scientists and leaders to thrive.

The Foundation seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as its next President — someone with a demonstrated commitment to academic surgery, a passion for philanthropy, and the ability to engage colleagues and donors in advancing the Foundation’s mission.


pOSITION DESCRIPTION

The President of the SUS Foundation provides strategic leadership and serves as Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, which also includes a Treasurer, Secretary, and Directors. Together, the Board identifies and advances the most effective ways to financially support trainees and academic surgeons while realizing the philanthropic commitments of the SUS.

The term of service for the President is three (3) years, with the opportunity for reappointment to a second consecutive term.


Eligibility Criteria – Candidates must:

  • Hold Active or Senior Membership in the Society of University Surgeons.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission and values of the SUS Foundation.
  • Be a supporter and advocate of the Foundation’s fundraising and stewardship efforts.
  • Be able to attend and preside over at least two Foundation Board meetings annually (typically held before/during the ACS Clinical Congress and the Academic Surgical Congress).
  • Possess prior experience in leadership, development, or philanthropy within academic or professional organizations (preferred).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors, presiding over all meetings and ensuring effective governance and engagement of members.
  • Guide the strategic direction of the Foundation, aligning philanthropic initiatives with the mission of the SUS.
  • Partner with the Treasurer and Secretary to ensure financial oversight and accountability.
  • Oversee periodic review and updates of Foundation policies, bylaws, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board to develop and implement fundraising strategies, including major gifts, planned giving, and donor engagement.
  • Serve as the public face and advocate of the Foundation, promoting its mission to donors, members, and external partners.
  • Lead and participate in stewardship activities to recognize donors and communicate the impact of their contributions.
  • Serve as a member of the SUS Executive Council, ensuring alignment between the Foundation and the Society.
  • Provide formal reports to the Executive Council and membership on Foundation activities, financial performance, and impact.
  • Work closely with the SUS President and leadership to identify joint initiatives and funding priorities that advance academic surgery

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished academic surgeon and respected leader who embodies the mission and values of the SUS. Desired qualities include:

Leadership and Vision

  • Proven ability to inspire and unite others around a shared mission.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and integrity in leadership roles.
  • Commitment to advancing academic surgery through philanthropy.

Commitment to Philanthropy

  • Deep appreciation for the role of philanthropy in supporting education, research, and leadership development.
  • Willingness to personally engage in fundraising and stewardship.
  • A personal record of philanthropic support for the SUS Foundation or comparable initiatives.

Strategic and Financial Acumen

  • Ability to provide oversight of Foundation finances and ensure responsible use of funds.
  • Experience in or understanding of nonprofit governance and sustainability.
  • Skill in translating strategic goals into measurable results.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the SUS Executive Council, Foundation Board, and staff.
  • A collegial and inclusive leadership style that reflects professionalism and service.

Dedication and Time Commitment

  • Commitment to devoting the necessary time to fulfill the duties of office, including meeting preparation, donor engagement, and event participation.
  • Active engagement in fundraising and strategic planning throughout the term.


NOMINATION PROCESS

Nominations (including self-nominations) should include:

  • A brief nomination letter describing the candidate’s qualifications and vision for the SUS Foundation.
  • The candidate’s curriculum vitae.

All nominations will be reviewed by the SUS Foundation Nominating Committee, and finalists will be contacted for additional information or discussion.
