The Society of University Surgeons (SUS) is dedicated to supporting and advancing leaders in academic surgery. Central to this mission is the SUS Foundation, which fosters the educational and scientific research activities of our membership. Strong leadership within the SUS Foundation is critical to ensuring our continued success — and we are now seeking nominations for new members of the SUS Foundation Board of Directors.
ABOUT THE ROLE
Members of the SUS Foundation Board of Directors serve a 3-year term and shall have an opportunity to serve a second term. Key responsibilities include:
- Assess, define, and promote the mission and goals of the Society of University Surgeons and its Foundation.
- Act as stewards to secure the future of research and education in academic surgery by working to build a strong and fiscally sound organization.
- Determine policies and procedures that support the ideals articulated above.
- Make a personal gift to the best of their ability. The SUSF Foundation should be a first, second, or, at the least, third top priority for personal giving. Board members are expected to support the Foundation personally through leadership giving even if they commit long hours of volunteer service, serve as the principal of a foundation or corporation which supports the Society/Foundation, or provide other grant or in-kind support.
- With the help and support of the Executive Director, identify, cultivate, solicit and close gifts from corporate, foundation and individual donor prospects.
- Support new and diverse initiatives in fundraising, for example, participating in a planned giving program.
- Act as an ambassador of the Foundation in public and private life.
- Serve on one of several committees dedicated to a specific aspect of fundraising: member, public donor, corporate, foundation, planned giving, major gift, etc.
- Nominate new members based on their ability to give and get gifts to support the SUSF mission.
- Maintain the highest standards of independence and ethics in relationships with funding partners.
Board members serve an initial three-year term, with the opportunity for reappointment to a second term.
